Third Reich Army Officers Dagger -Alcoso
This piece has a lot going for it including “high lift” Alcoso crossguard and the rare cream coloured “Galalith” grip. (This grip material is often misnamed as “Goliath” )
Galalith is universally known as milkstone (or Erinoid in the United Kingdom) and is a synthetic plastic material manufactured by the interaction of casein and formaldehyde. The commercial name is derived from the Ancient Greek words γάλα (gala, "milk") and λῐ́θος (lithos, "stone"). It is odourless, insoluble in water, biodegradable, non-allergenic, antistatic and virtually nonflammable. Galalith was marketed in boards, pipes and rods. In 1913, thirty million litres (eight million US gallons) of milk were used to produce Galalith in Germany alone.
Undamaged pommel with good definition to the oak leaves. As discussed the well defined crossguard is the sought after Alcoso “high lift” version having well detailed eagle and swastica depiction. Bright blade with needle sharp tip has no damage and would clean to a full mint state. The Alcoso maker mark is stamped horizontally on the reverse ricasso while the leather blade washer remains beneath the crossguard.
Scabbard has precise stippling to the panels and high detail to the oak leaf depiction on the bands. Sides of the scabbard have some loss of finish and minor corrosion.
Highly collectible example of a rare dagger type.
