Prototype Bundeswehr Luftwaffe Dagger
When the German Air Force was re-established after WW11, it was necessary to propose a new uniform for its members, to include a dress dagger for its flying officers. The prototype of this dagger was based on that used during the war, albeit on a slightly larger scale. After a very brief production run, it was decided that the similarities to the Nazi version of the dagger were too great to be considered politically correct in the Cold War climate of the time, consequently the design was dropped and existing examples withdrawn, leaving just a few examples in existence, this being one.
Heart shaped pommel has oak leaf and acorn designs running from base to crown. Celluloid covered grip is based on a wooden former and is wrapped with twisted springy wire. Crossguard consists of an open winged eagle looking to its left having high detailing to its breast and wing feathers. It’s talons are outstretched, whilst it’s tail may be seen behind the talons. Crossguard reverse features a raised area possibly for an engraving. Much factory darkening remains throughout. Bright blade is in excellent condition and void of any maker mark. Scabbard retains some factory lacquer and features stippled panels to obverse and reverse with an leaf decoration to the lower obverse and reverse. Scabbard bands are oak leaf decorated.
A rare, possibly unique survivor marking the beginning of the democratic defence of Germany.
