Third Reich First Model RLB Officer Dagger-Weyersberg
Finding a first model RLB in decent condition is becoming very difficult these days, not just because quality daggers of any kind have all but disappeared from the market, but also because most of the first models were converted to second models in the period. The stunning “art deco” look of this series of daggers has always made them a favourite with collectors, and completing a collection of all four these days is quite an achievement.
This piece is all early quality, heavy construction having a perfect highly vaulted pommel. Wooden grip is covered in fine grain Moroccan leather having a barely discernible vertical join. First model RLB insignia is correctly pinned to the obverse face and has all the blue enamel remaining, and most of the silvering to the sunburst.
Fluted crossguard arms are perfectly straight and waffenampt stamped, this stamping being repeated on the top face of the upper scabbard fitting. Crossguard eagle and mobile swastica have no damage; the patina on these fittings is quite beautiful and getting better with every year that passes.
Blade has some minor age to the surfaces but no nicks or damage to the edges and a perfect point. A thin leather washer remains beneath the crossguard. Scabbard is perfectly straight with no damage to the matching Moroccan leather covering. Top and bottom fittings retain the fixing screws and are in perfect condition, the upper fitting developing a superb “crazy paving” patina. Attached to the upper fitting is a scabbard ring and leather suspension strap-so often missing on this model. Minor crazing to the leather which has the properly fixed oval metal joining pieces. An early “Asmann” and “D.R.G.M. Spring clip completes this fabulous example.
