Third Reich Luftwaffe Dagger-“Funeral” by Klaas
These black gripped examples have acquired the reputation of being pieces created to be worn at the funeral of a Luftwaffe comrade, and whilst this is extremely unlikely, it cannot be disproved. Whatever the origin, they are a rare, legitimate variation worthy of inclusion in any collection of third Reich edged weapons.
Pommel and crossguard have no damage and show much hand enhancement, particularly to the stippling in the pommel background, and to the feathering in the birds wings and talons. Black trolon grip has precisely wound twisted silver wire enhancement and a minute chip adjacent to the pommel. A period portepee is wrapped in the correct tie about the lower grip area. Needle sharp blade grades full mint, having much crossgrain remaining, and a precisely stamped Rob Klaas “kissing cranes” logo to the reverse ricasso. Airplane grey scabbard has no dents or other damage and is complete with both side mounted throat screws. Scabbard bands and rings are properly affixed.
Overall an excellent example of a rarely seen dagger variation.
