Third Reich “Red Cross” Officers Dagger
These DRK Officers daggers have been divided into “Red Cross” and Social Welfare” types by collectors over the years, the former having rectangular carrying holes in the scabbard rings, the latter having round ones. The reality is that these differences are purely manufacturers variations of the same dagger type: the difference between the two branches of service is distinguished by the carrying straps only. (Both types available on this website)
The tang nut cover plate on this example has some damage to the screwdriver slots, but not at all bad. Removing this plate gives access to the tang nuts hidden beneath. Orange grip in perfect condition and beautiful toning. Crossguard in fine condition having no loss of finish. Reverse langet is plain, whilst the obverse incorporates the DRK droop winged eagle with chest swastica perching upon a large cross. Details are particularly crisp and all background pebbling is present. A black leather blade washer is present beneath the crossguard. Beautiful bright blade has all its crossgrain and a needle sharp tip. As is normal with these types, no maker mark is present on the blade ricasso. Scabbard is near perfect having fine pebbled panels and scabbard bands which incorporate the rectangular holes which have become erroneously associated with the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz. Both scabbard throat screws are present and appear unturned.
First class example of an under appreciated dagger type.
