A rare survivor, being a program of events aboard the cruise ship “Wilhelm Gustloff” which was utilised as part of the “Strength Through Joy” scheme. (KDF- Kraft Dutch Freude) was a German NSDAP-operated leisure organization in Nazi Germany. It was part of the German Labour Front (Deutsche Arbeitsfront), the national labour organization at that time.
Requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine after the start of the war as a German military transport ship she was sunk on 30 January 1945 by Soviet submarine S-13 in the Baltic Sea while evacuating civilians and military personnel from East Prussia and the German-occupied Baltic states, and German military personnel from Gotenhafen as the Red Army advanced.
