Third Reich “Full Stag” RAD Dagger
These initial production Hewers were originally issued to both Officers and men, but this changed when the officers dagger was introduced in 1938. Current research may indicate that the full stag version would have been for officers only, but that has still to be confirmed. Certainly these examples were expensive to produce, being solid nickel, and with stag grips which covered the “beak” of the pommel, resulting in much material wastage.
The grip on this example is superbly shaped and fitted, having pleasing colour tones and a very tactile feel. Backstrap shows some minor hits, being used as a convenient hammer in the field. Ferrule is stamped with the accountability number “Bn1417”, this number being repeated on the upper scabbard throat. Factory darkening remains within the recess of the crossguard design. Bright blade has some age to the surfaces, but this could be mostly removed by careful use of a semi chrome product, as these blades were Matt finished from the factory. RAD motto is prominent to the obverse with the Eickhorn trademark and the RAD acceptance stamp to the reverse. Scabbard is straight and undamaged having the early anodised finish to the centre panel. Lower fitting has some minor dents but retains its factory darkening, as does the upper fitting. All screws are present.
Very nice-and very heavy! example.
