Third Reich Shooting Association Dagger-Hörster
This fascinating piece is featured in Tom Johnson’s large format “German Daggers of World War II-A Photohraphic Reference” and represents one of the small number of standard issues daggers which were modified either as special issue items pre-sale, or by their owners, possibly because of the fragility of the original celluloid grip. Whatever the explanation, this dagger is a superb example of the DSv dress sidearm, in excellent condition.
Fluted stag stag grip has the crossed rifle insignia inset into the obverse face. This grip is superbly trimmed and fit to the pommel cap and ferrule. Recurve crossguard has detailed acorn depictions to the quillion ends and retains all its plating. Highly detailed clamshell features stippled background to the leaf depictions and a correctly pinned rifle association badge, which has the only, very small, swasticas to be found on this dagger type.
Blade grades mint, having superb etchings depicting flora fauna and shooting targets. The Hörster mark is stamped to the obverse ricasso. An intact green felt washer remains beneath the crossguard. The dark brown/black frog is the ultra thin K98 style associated with these types having a single rivet with an all green shooting portepee correctly tied. Scabbard leather has twin decorative lines to both obverse and reverse and features a seam to the rear. Both scabbard fittings are securely attached and numbered beneath the staples.
Beautiful example with the benefit of a book entry, and a grip that will never crack!
