WW1 “Bullet Pencil” from Christmas Tin

One of the items found in the Princess Mary Christmas Gift Tin, this example is exceptional in that the pencil section is what appears to be a custom made propelling pencil. Perfectly fit to the “crown over M” cartridge case, the mechanism is a masterpiece of miniature engineering, and still operates perfectly.

Brass body with an articulated wooden head, and arms that can be positioned to give a “thumbs up” gesture, these charms were given to British soldiers to carry into battle.
The charm combines two good luck traditions: the “thumbs up” sign, and “touch wood” by touching the wooden head.

Originally containing a chocolate bar made from cocoa grown in Trinidad, Grenada or St Lucia, these tins were often purchased by relatives as a parting gift for soldiers going to the front, and bears the emblems and mottos of the manufacturing colonies on the lid. Perfect brass tin having the officers “Sterling Silver” marked “bullet pencil”. The pencil case was made from a spent .303 cartridge recovered from UK firing ranges and marked with a stylised “M” beneath a crown.
The Christmas card is marked 1915 and is in fine condition. The standard Princess Mary photo card is included.

A complete tin containing cigarettes, tobacco, Christmas card with envelope and Princess Mary photo card.
Of particular interest is the name and service details written, in pencil, on the envelope, indicating that the recipient was a Chief Petty Officer serving on HMS Powerful.

Excellent tin which has tarnished to be almost black in appearance. Containing a “bullet pencil” with a correctly marked shell case, and a miniature 1914-18 war medal. There are no markings on the rim of the medal as is correct for miniatures.
